Testing the accuracy of water meters

Testing the accuracy of water meters

If you think the meter on your property is not accurately recording your water use, you can ask for it to be checked and tested. There is a fee for this service, and you can find the right fee for the size of the water meter in our section on fees. If the meter test registers an accuracy error of more than 5 per cent (fast or slow), then we waive the fee for you. We will remove and replace the meter at no cost. We may also adjust the water use on your account.

Please apply for testing of the water meter on your property:

How testing works

We will either test the water meter on your property or send it to a laboratory off site. More than 99 per cent of the meters we test are found to be accurate.

* On site testing. This test is highly reliable, and is completed on the day. We measure 200 litres of water through two devices - one is the meter on your property, the other is calibrated test equipment which accurately measures water passed through it. We compare these results with the water meter at your property and may test twice to verify the results.

* Off site testing. We remove and replace the meter on your property, before sending it to the Australian Flow Management Group at the University of South Australia's Mawson Lakes campus, a laboratory accredited by the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA). The results of the testing are returned to us.

Information for tenants

As your landlord pays for meter testing, they must be the one to authorise the request. Once completed, we provide test results in writing to them.
