Students to build coastal resilience in Surfers Way

Students from Yahl Primary School will be replanting coastal area, ‘Surfers Way’, thanks to support provided through SA Water’s 2023-24 Community Partnerships Program.

Announced as one of the program’s eight recipients, the restoration will help stabilise the sand dunes, prevent erosion and re-establish native habitat.

SA Water’s annual program provides a total of $75,000 to support grassroots organisations delivering projects that involve water sustainability, community wellbeing and environmental outcomes across South Australia.

Yahl Primary School teacher Chris Morrison said the depletion of natural resources in Surfers Way has impacted the local ecosystem, with endangered birds and animals leaving the area.

“The students will work towards replenishing this coastal heartland, providing a safe haven for endangered species,” Chris said.

“They will also develop a profile of this project to increase strong stewardship and demonstrate an improved legacy for Limestone Coast recreational areas. These hands-on experiences will not only raise awareness about environmental issues but also foster a deep sense of responsibility and connection to nature among the young participants.

“We can make a difference in protecting our precious coastal environments and we are immensely proud of our students and their commitment to becoming responsible custodians of our planet. Eventually the area will be used as a teaching opportunity and a place for the general public to explore and enjoy.”

SA Water's Manager of Brand and Community Marketing Kellie McDonald said they’re excited to work with groups like Yahl Primary School who are also focused on creating sustainable and healthy communities.

“The students will participate in various activities, including seedling propagation, beach clean-ups and the planting of native, water wise vegetation along the coastline,” Kellie said.

“By investing in the education and active involvement of the younger generation, we are cultivating a sustainable future for our environment.

"Among the other successful initiatives this year are a cool, green home garden exhibition at the Riverland Field Days and a new sensory garden at Cowell on the Eyre Peninsula."
