South East success for community water partnerships

School children and adults living with a disability will soon enjoy new inclusive facilities at Lucindale's Community Swimming Centre and Mount Gambier's Gordon Education Centre as the result of just under $13,000 in financial support through SA Water's 2019 Community Partnerships Program.

Announced today as successful recipients, the program provides $75,000 to support a variety of local community groups deliver events and projects that foster a better life in communities across regional and metropolitan South Australia.

As part of the program, the Lucindale Pool will receive financial support to purchase and install a disability swing allowing people with limited mobility to use the redeveloped swimming facility and interact with the wider community through swimming.

Mount Gambier's Gordon Education Centre will also establish a sensory garden for school children with a disability to learn about conservation in a hands-on, play-based way.

SA Water's General Manager Customers, Strategy and Innovation Anna Jackson said both facilities are deserving recipients for their goal to improve services for a better life in their communities.

"Water plays such an important role in everyday life, and beyond its importance to public health and recreation is a key educational tool for people and families living with a disability," Anna said.

"These two projects will provide more inclusive access to exercise and education for the South East community, and we're excited to work with the Lucindale Community Economic Development Board Lucindale Pool and Gordon Education Centre in seeing these two amazing ideas come to fruition."

The projects are among 11 recipients of this year's Community Partnerships Program, which saw overwhelming interest from events and projects from communities across SA involving water or water use for a better life.

"We had more than double the amount of applications than for our 2018 program and narrowing the field down to our final list of projects was tough given the amazing range of community groups and events," Anna said.

"It's clear that so many of our customers have ideas and events that make a real difference in the lives of others in the community, and we can't wait to support this group of worthy recipients throughout the next year."
