Create a cool, green garden at the Riverland Field Days

Berri Barmera Landcare will demonstrate how to create a sustainable environment in your garden at the popular Riverland Field Days next month, thanks to support provided through SA Water’s 2023-24 Community Partnerships Program.

Announced as one of the program’s eight recipients, the two-day event serves as an ideal platform to address the environmental challenges faced by the Riverland region, which is heavily impacted by a changing climate.

SA Water’s annual program provides a total of $75,000 to support grassroots organisations to deliver projects that involve water sustainability, community wellbeing and environmental outcomes across South Australia.

Berri Barmera Landcare General Manager Sharon Schrapel said attendees to the Field Days will be inspired by its interactive display and conversations with industry experts to transform their own gardens with low water use plants and creative design.

“We will be showcasing two large-scale models of a typical quarter acre rural housing allotment,” Sharon said.

“One model will represent a traditional poor environmental design, while the other will demonstrate an innovative design incorporating features like rainwater tanks and plants that have adapted to arid and semi-arid areas.

“By showcasing different garden designs and providing accessible solutions, we can help community members create cooler, greener environments in their own backyards.”

SA Water's Manager of Brand and Community Marketing Kellie McDonald said they’re excited to work with groups like the Berri Barmera Landcare who are also focused on creating sustainable and healthy communities.

“Plant materials at the display will be used to create a sensory journey helping event attendees to gain an understanding of the process involved in achieving a more sustainable garden environment,” Kellie said.

"Among the other successful initiatives in our Community Partnerships Program this year are an initiative focused on replanting a coastal area helping to re-establish native habitat in the state’s South East and a new sensory garden at Cowell on the Eyre Peninsula."
