NORTHERN ADELAIDE

IRRIGATION SCHEME

ONCE IN A GENERATION AGRIBUSINESS OPPORTUNITY

The Government of South Australia is partnering with the Australian Government in the development of a sophisticated, world-class agrifood precinct on the Northern Adelaide Plains to meet the growing global demand for food.

The Northern Adelaide Plains offers:

  • the largest covered, protected cropping area in Australia, with more greenhouse production acreage than any other region
  • home to ideal natural growing conditions for fruit and nut orchards, intensive animal husbandry, broad-acre and vegetable production
  • a mature industry and existing hub for developing export agri-food businesses in close proximity to the Northern Adelaide Food Park and South Australian Produce Market.

The Northern Adelaide Irrigation Scheme (NAIS) provides agribusiness operators and investors:

  • secure, safe and reliable climate-independent, season-independent water
  • extensive in-scheme infrastructure
  • tightly managed water quality
  • stable indexed pricing
  • long-term tradeable water contracts
  • ideal climate, terrains and soils
  • ready access to a skilled workforce, transport and logistics, infrastructure and services.

With 35 per cent of the contracted volume of water sold, NAIS has capacity to support agribusiness growth on the Northern Adelaide Plains.
